Just because God didn’t make “Adam and Steve” in the beginning as a representation of condoning same gender love, does not give a valid reasoning for claiming two men who love each other are a disgrace to God. If that were true, He would have condemned Jonathan and David or even Jesus and John. If we really look at Genesis and focus on Adam and Eve in the garden, we don’t read about the love they shared or them acting as husband and wife, even though Genesis 2:25 says, “the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed”. Adam himself didn’t fully recognize Eve as his wife. When confronted by God as the reason why he disobeyed, Adam said, “the woman whom You gave to be with me” Genesis 3:12. Adam didn’t say “the wife” or “my wife”, he said “the woman”. Therefore, the writer of Genesis, which is believed to be Moses, is showing the purpose of Genesis 1–3 was to show how we all came in to being. He was teaching us that the man’s “helper suitable for him” is “woman”. Which Paul confirms in 1 Corinthians 11:9 when explaining, “for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake”. Moses, in Genesis 1–3, was focusing on how the world got in the shape it is in today. God was not showing us that only two people of the opposite gender can be in love nor ways He declaring heterosexuality for all. God was not talking about or showing love or sexuality at all when having Moses tell of Adam and Eve. God had Moses to write why “a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife” because of the way He designed woman. God, in these chapters, was showing us humanity and our disobedience. In other words, God was not showing a love story, He was giving us our origin. That’s why the book is called Genesis.
We know that Adam and Eve loved each other, but not because of their gender but because of the spiritual intimacy that God created in Genesis 1. And because of how God made them “one flesh”. They loved each other because God made them for one another, spiritually and physically. “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate” (Matthew 19:6). Adam and Eve were ‘one’ in spirit (learn more in Be Fruitful and Multiply). In the spiritual, only the male and the female soul can be knitted together, just as in the natural only a man and a woman can have sexual intercourse, which means becoming “one flesh” (learn more about soul knitting in When Two Hearts Become One). A female and female soul cannot be knit together because God did not design them that way, but they can still love one another. So, it is in the natural. Two females cannot become “one flesh” but if God has led them together they can love one another.
We are God’s spiritual children
In verse 27 it says, “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them”. What is God? Jesus says, “God is spirit” John 4:24. God created us “in His own image”; He created us as spiritual beings. He created our soul, which is male and female. In Genesis 2, we see the Lord God forming the man and then woman. We should notice that God is giving us the origin and the order in which we were formed. Paul shows us this a little in 1 Corinthians 11:12 when he says, “For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God”.
The balance of male and female, of man and woman
Adam and Eve show balance between the man and the woman. Adam and Steve would show love not balance. The whole purpose of the creation accounts are to show how man and woman are both equally needed. Genesis 2 could not show Adam and Steve because God was showing the order in which we came. God had to show both genders because Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 are showing how God created and formed all living things (learn about Genesis 1 and 2 in The Differences of Genesis 1 and Genesis 2). Again, God was giving us our origin. If He created Adam and Steve, how then would we learn about how the woman came into being? There would probably be a big fuss and people saying that women were created by the devil since it’s Adam and Steve, or that men could only love men and women could only love women. But thank God we serve a wise God that showed how both genders came into being.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away” Matthew 24:35
We must remember, our physical world as we know it will pass away, that means our physical bodies as well. What then is left? Our souls (learn about the soul in Do You Know What You Are?). If we fall in love with someone of the same gender God is not displeased. You are not falling in love with their gender, you are falling in love with their soul. Therefore, the two individuals will look like the Adam and Eve of Genesis 1, which should be everyone’s goal. And we can obtain this goal by forming deep intimacy with our Creator.
“When I found him whom my soul loves; I held on to him and would not let him go” Songs of Solomon 3:4
If God has led you to a person of the same gender, have courage, trust, and understanding to know God has made you ‘one’ in spirit with your true intimate friend. The “friend who is as your own soul” Deuteronomy 3:16. And that my friends, is an authentic, bold, passionate, unashamed, blissful, never ending love.
