Democratic chameleon: trans color now – KeYou
Senator Warren of Massachusetts is now advocating trans rights in her bid for 2020 presidency. She has become especially active since this February following announcement to run. This included adding her pronouns in official Twitter account and attacking Trump administration via social media. Sen. Warren claimed that “the Trump administration is trying to roll back important protections for trans Americans” to show her solidarity with trans community. “Everyone should be able to access high-quality, affordable, gender-affirming health care,”. For sure. Well done. But why now?
Trans people healthcare protection elimination has been proposed by Trump administration this May. In particular, gender identity could be removed from a list of factors affecting healthcare. The proposal aiming to roll back Obama’s legislation may potentially result in term “sex” becoming free for interpretation and thus removing protection against discrimination. Surprisingly, she previously claimed paying for trans surgery not to be “a good use of taxpayer dollars.” What was it? A sudden enlightenment or a way to get new voters?
Regardless of the causes, trans health matters and action should be taken immediately to maintain equality. Another initiative of Sen. Warren is worth noting. That is, same-sex couples have been previously enforced to file taxes separately in many states thus overpaying a lot. With the same-sex marriage legalized the couples became eligible for tax refund for the last three years. What is proposed now is to let those to claim a refund for the entire period of being married. It is fair enough and restores justice neglected earlier. According to experts total refunds may amount up to $57M. “The federal government forced legally married same-sex couples in Massachusetts to file as individuals and pay more in taxes for almost a decade,” said Sen. Warren. “We need to call out that discrimination and to make it right — Congress should pass the Refund Equality Act immediately,” she added. Let us hope for politicians to be concerned about trans rights as the electoral campaign is over.
