Before it even hits Broadway, the Britney Spears jukebox musical Once Upon a One More Time is already heading to the big screen.

Sony Pictures won an auction to the movie rights of the musical, according to Deadline.

Once Upon A One More Time was only announced last month. It’s a feminist fairy tale with an original plot, set to the music of Britney Spears.

The musical sees classic princesses such as Snow White and Cinderella starting a book club and discovering feminism.

The synopsis for the musical reads: ‘Once Upon a Time … Cinderella, Snow White, and the other fairytale princesses gather for their book club, when — oh, baby, baby! — a rogue fairy godmother drops The Feminine Mystique into their corseted laps, spurring a royal revelation.’

Betty Friedan’s famous book helped spark the second wave of feminism in 1963.

John Davis’ Davis Entertainment is producing the film along with Spears and her manager Larry Rudolph.

The musical, meanwhile, premieres this fall at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago. It will begin on 29 October before the official opening on 13 November. The show will then run until 1 December, one day before Spears’s 38th birthday.

It opens on Broadway next year.

Her reaction

Spears gave the musical her blessing after seeing a workshop version.

‘I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs — especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore,’ she said in a statement.

The show will be directed by Rock of Ages’ Kristin Hangii and features a book by Jon Hartmere. Moreover, YouTube stars and married couple Keone and Mari Madrid will choreograph.

Casting and the rest of the creative team will be announced soon.

News of the musical came months after Britney canceled her Vegas residency due to her father’s ailing health, which has prompted numerous theories.
