Female Student Disciplined After Kneeing a Boy Protesting Trans Restroom Rights | News
(EDGE) When seven male students tried to enter the women’s room in an Alaska High School in protest over the use of the men’s room by a trans student, a female student responded by giving a knee to one of them.
Now, according to media reports, she faces disciplinary action, as do the seven young men.
Local newspaper Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported on the story, saying that the incident took place at North Pole High School in Fairbanks.
The school itself posted details on what happened. On April 4, a “student transitioning from female to male took a selfie in the boys; restroom on Monday, April 1, and posted on Snapchat,” the school’s account said.
“A group of male students decided to go into a girls’ restroom to take a Snapchat of their own, similar to what the transgender student did, as a form of protest,” the account went on to say.
“On April 4, a group of male students began to enter the restroom. Only one male student actually proceeded past the door frame. The other male students followed behind him and were not yet in the restroom. A female student (not the transgender student) was exiting the restroom at the time the first male student began to enter. The female student kicked the first male student in the groin. The male students turned around and left the area.”
The story was picked up by political news outlet The Hill, which reported that Republican Alaska state Rep. Tammie Wilson, a Republican, applauded the young woman’s action, saying, “good for her.”
“I would have taught my daughter to do the same,” added Wilson.
According to the Washington Post, the female student’s family claim that she was expelled. The Superintendent of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Karen Gaborik, would not confirm the expulsion, but told the Post that the male students faced disciplinary measures for having tried to “enter the girls’ bathroom.”
The school’s post notes that “There was, and continues to be, conversation among students regarding transgender students at NPHS and the use of restrooms.”
