Watch As Mayor Pete Buttigieg Becomes The First Openly Gay Democrat To Run For President
Pete Buttigieg, the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, will officially announce his presidential campaign on Sunday, becoming the first openly gay Democrat to run for president.
Buttigieg announced his exploratory committee at a January news conference in Washington, DC. He told CNN in late March that while, “all of the indicators are pointing” toward an official campaign, “a launch is something you only get to do once, and we’re not going to do that until we have all of the pieces in place.”
He raised more than $7 million in the first quarter of 2019 and in recent weeks, Buttigieg has placed third in multiple polls of Democratic voters in Iowa. He also came in third in a recent poll of Democratic voters in New Hampshire.
If elected, Buttigieg would become America’s youngest president (39 years old as of January 20, 2021, when he’d be inaugurated) and America’s first openly gay president.
The Harvard-educated Afghanistan war veteran who speaks about half a dozen languages has also gone after Vice President Mike Pence in recent weeks.
“It’s hard to face the truth that there were times in my life when, if you had shown me exactly what it was inside me that made me gay, I would have cut it out with a knife. If you had offered me a pill to make me straight, I would’ve swallowed it before you had time to give me a sip of water,” Buttigieg said in a speech earlier this month at an LGBTQ Victory Fund event.
He added, in a swipe at the infamously anti-LGBT Vice President Mike Pence, “That’s the thing that I wish the Mike Pences of the world would understand. That if you have a problem with who I am, your problem is not with me. Your quarrel, sir, is with my creator.”
“I mean when I came out, Mike Pence was the governor of Indiana, when I joined the military, ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ was the law of the land, and when it first crossed my mind that I might run for office someday, I believed that coming out would be a career death sentence,” Buttigieg told reporters at a DC hotel as he rolled out his campaign.
