Every year, Queen Elizabeth II records a video with a special Christmas message for everyone in the UK.
But this year, another queen has something important to say.
‘Good morning Britain,’ she said in the video. ‘Welcome to a Qween’s Speech.’
She then added: ‘In the past few years, the LGBTQIA+ community has had some triumphant wins and we have seen some incredible progress… finally.’
‘We can officially raise a glass at a gay wedding and trans visibility in the media has never been at such a high.
‘But let’s be honest – there’s still a lot of work to do,’ she said.
Munroe Bergdorf: ‘Education, legislation, reparation’
Bergdorf then goes on to address the lack of representation in the media for young LGBTI people. She said our education system must reflect the diversity of our classrooms.
She also said we need to legislate against the eradication of queer spaces, rights of sex workers and the spread of HIV.
‘For many of us, it has been a battle just to get here,’ she said. ‘For others, the war is just beginning.’
Bergdorf also urged people to help try to help stop the ‘shocking rates’ of transgender suicides.
‘Wake up, Britain,’ she concluded. ‘This is our time to rise up. Education, legislation, reparation.
‘Long live our qweens,’ she said.
