Rexburg police are investigating after a small dog was allegedly beaten to death in an apartment. Officers were called to the scene by a concerned neighbor, who claimed to hear the dog squealing and yelping in pain. Upon entrance, they found a deceased Shih Tzu who appeared to have been beaten and possibly choked. The suspect grabbed the pup by the neck, police stated, and beat the poor animal unconscious with a rolled-up newspaper. The suspect told police that he was just trying to clean his pet’s eyes.
Miguel Rivera has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, which carries a punishment of up to six months in jail. Sign below to demand that Rivera receive the maximum penalty possible, if convicted.

Per police, Rivera grabbed the Shih Tzu by the neck and possibly choked the poor animal. He then beat his pet with a rolled-up newspaper, police stated, until the animal fell unconscious. Rivera was reportedly drunk and disorderly at the time of the beating. A second live dog was also removed from the premises. Rivera will face his charge at a later date.
